She is a Lavani performer, it is a combination of traditional songs and dance. She started her career by performing Lavani at an early age. She has performed the traditional Lavani dance worldwide. Surekha Punekar started with Lavani dance performance since 1986. She stated that there were only three people present at the time of her first Lavani performance. Apart from being an artist, she is additionally a playback singer. In the year 2011, she made her first on-screen TV debut with “Ek Peksha Ek Apsara Aali”. She also made a directorial debut in the stage show titled, “Nashikchi Naar”, in the year 2011.
She was also seen in the reality show, “Sargam” which telecasted on Zee Yuva in the year 2017. Surekha Punekar has also featured in some movies titled, “Chhatishi Kawaloon Dhara”, “Sakharpudha” and “Dabun Baghtoy Chikoo
In the 2019 General Elections, it was predicted that she would most likely take part in the elections with the Indian National Congress Party from Pune Lok Sabha Constituency. In any case, in a meeting with the Marathi Newspaper, Loksatta, she explained that she would not be part of the elections. As of 2019, she is one of the contenders of the Bigg Boss unscripted show Marathi Season 2.
